Urban knitting
Whai is urban knitting?

Guerrilla knitting, yarn bombing, urban knitting, these are the most common names to identify what is now defined as a new art form, an expression of a contemporary language. In simple words, it is a very old activity, once relegated to houses smelling of wood and chicken stock, we are talking about "knitting". What our old grandmothers used to do, at the stove, with quick movements and crochet needles used masterfully.

Nowadays, this old "wisdom" is suggested in the folds of our busy tarmac and noisy cities, resulting in more than a simple gesture of Grandma.  Urban Knitting is no more than a new form of street art which gives colour to our  grey cities using colorful wool. First started in the United States and northern Europe, this trend has come to Italy. For a couple of years, in fact, the art of decorating urban spaces with colored thread, seems to please "La Bella Italia", as shown by the growing number of events that occur from north to south. Re-evaluation of handicrafts, social integration, improved urban areas, there are different types of motivation that accompany this new form of "street art".

Who we are and what we do?
Who are we?

Knitting  Relay  is one of the first groups that has emerged in Italy with the intention of disseminating and promoting textile art (knitting and crocheting). For us, the urban  knitting experience is not new, nor are the actions of collective participation and projects related to the itinerant art of wool and thread.

Born in June 2011, the group KR was founded by the creative artists  Andrea Kotliarsky, Lauraluna Ceccolini and Mariapia Gambino. In their project of "textile art by post",  30 women who met through the internet worked to create a single piece, which travelled throughout Italy for 8 months. Today "Knitting Relay" is more than just a "fancy", it is really and truly a collaborative project that works to promote working together, sharing the passion for textile art.

The KR group, even though it is still in its infancy, already has a number of activities to promote participation and collective action of Urban Knitting: textile art workshops for children and adults, knit-coffee meetings, and collaborative projects of solidarity.

Another interesting development is the  fingerknitting relay, a group game involving children and adults, designed by Andrea Kotliarsky and Mariapia Gambino

What do we do?
Total de Pink - Urban Knitting in Faenza 2013

After a year, the KR group returned to  Faenza, a town which in March 2012 hosted the "artwork" that was the result of a collective work done by the 30 women that gave rise to the group of the same name.
Our new proposal is to cover the centre of this city in the region of Romagna in "pink patches". Why Total  Pink? Because pink is the color that characterize this initiative. Urban Knitting The action aimed at the city of Faenza main theme is the "woman". A project designed by women for women, without attempting to exclude the opposite sex! Women relate with the difficulties of daily life, women are backstage, offstage. A discussion of Women for Women, without rhetoric. And to do this, we will introduce different groups in Italy dealing with "knitting", all those groups in recent years have sprung up and formed with the common goal of disseminating and sharing the passion for textile art. We will include the participation of voluntary organizations, businesses and ordinary people, and anyone who would like to share with us this great experience. Together we are going to  create many pink squares, which will be used to cover some of the urban elements of the city of Faenza. A mass collaboration for a single goal!

THIS IS INDEPENDENT, AND NOT FOR PROFIT PROJECT. IT IS ORGANISED WITH A "ZERO" BUDGET, WITH COMMITMENT AND PASSION. EVERY CONTRIBUTION IS WELCOME!

  1. Brilliant idea - the differences that have existed between male and female or 'high' and 'low' art is an issue that is slowly being irradicated by events like this. Thankfully today, in the contemporary art scene not only both men and women feel free to express their art with any material or art form that they feel comfortable with and enjoy using, making this a refreshing change from the sexist and elitist attitudes of the past -
